Did Nickel Creek Just Break Up?

Posted by Larry Karnowski at August 28, 2006 5:30 PM

Just got this email... and, whoa! Their website is down right now too!

Dearest Listener,

After seven years of extensive touring in support of three records (seventeen years as a band), we've decided to take a break of indefinite length at the end of 2007 to preserve the environment we've sought so hard to create and to pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure to write, record, and perform for you through the years and we'd like to heartily thank you for your invaluable contribution to our musical lives.

Yours,

Nickel Creek
(Sean, Sara, and Chris)

What gives? Or is this just a "we're not going to tour the rest of the year" note? If so, why the scary language? "Indefinite" and "pursue other interests?"

Just when I was really, really starting to respect this band too. Hmmm.

Hmm, I hate to link to it... ewwwww, but their... MySpace page... (there, I said it!) seems to indicate they're definitely breaking up.

Hmm, they're so young, they'll be back, no question.

Maybe they've decided to finish High School, and they'll be back after the 2007 prom?

Seriously, though, I'm bummed.

What????? Shit-tacular. This is really upsetting, even if the upside is my secret boyfriend Chris Thile will get to spend more time with me.

And yeah, the timing is shattering. It seems like they were really just coming into their own.

Man. This hurts.

Here's the full skinny... sounds like they're going to finish out this tour and part ways (sounds like a temporary thing) sometime in 2007.

My money says that they'll be back together within five years, and I'm sure I'll see them jam together every year at Merlefest anyway. No biggie.

I think I'll spend the rest of the afternoon silently weeping. They've really been a huge influence in modern bluegrass - taking it to places no one ever really expected. It sounds to me like trouble was just starting to bubble a little bit between the three of them and they decided that some alone time might be a good thing. It sounds temporary to me, too. At least I hope.
