And so it begins. The brutal onslaught of CD goodness that this September brings. Will any of us be left with money in our wallets at the end of the month? It doesn't look good, my friends. It doesn't look good.

New releases of note for Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006:
Chris Thile -- How To Grow a Woman From the Ground (Sugar Hill)
The latest solo album from my secret boyfriend. Look for a totally unbiased HW.org review of this one soon.
Big Bill Broonzy -- Amsterdam Live Concerts 1953 [box set] (Munich)
Songs, storytelling, and extensive liner notes telling this Mississippi bluesman's tale.
The Duhks -- Migrations (Sugar Hill)
Richard Buckner -- Meadow (Merge)
Trout Fishing in America -- My Best Day (Trout)
OK, yeah, it's kid stuff. But it's that kind that adults can listen along to without becoming homicidal (looking at you, The Wiggles). Plus, I don't care how old you are, I defy you to resist songs with titles such as "My Hair Had a Party Last Night" and "I've Got a Friend (And He Won't Be Quiet)." Yeah, I mean, we've all been there.
Madeleine Peyroux -- Half the Perfect World (Rounder)
Barenaked Ladies -- Barenaked Ladies Are Me (Desperation)
Kasey Chambers -- Carnival (Warner Bros)
It's been out in Australia and elsewhere for several weeks now, but now it's available to us Yanks.
Yo La Tengo -- I Am Not Afraid of You And I Will Beat Your Ass (Matador)
I don't actually know that much about this band, but I know that's a super-great album title.
Jonatha Brooke -- Live in New York (Bad Dog)
The Black Keys -- Magic Potion (Nonesuch)

And ooooooh no, it doesn't end there. Also this week come not one, but TWO, delicious box sets from some record labels who have brought some mighty fine music to the world:
various artists -- Sugar Hill Records: A Retrospective [box set] (Sugar Hill)
The label celebrates its 25th year with 81 songs spanning four discs, plus a DVD with artist interviews, photos and music videos. Artists include Sam Bush, Nickel Creek, Townes Van Zandt, Darrell Scott, Robert Earl Keen, Donna the Buffalo and Dolly Parton ... and I'm leaving out a lot.
various artists -- American Music: The Hightone Records Story [box set] (Hightone)
Seventy-nine songs on four CDs (Disc 1 is blues, 2 is rock, 3 is country and 4 is songwriters/folk) plus a DVD of goodies, yada yada yada. Artists include Joe Ely, Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, Heather Myles, The Blasters, Robert Cray, Buddy Miller and Chris Smither. Also includes big-ass book.

Hope you weren't planning to eat this week. Or pay rent. Because forget it.

Would like to also honorable mention John Mayer's new album, Continuum. 4 1/2 stars and lots of love from All Music: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:3cfuxqqdld0e

25 word (or less) review:
Richard Buckner's "Meadow" is a keeper. Nothing out of character here, no sylistic leaps or huge surprises. Poetry set to music. Hum along. Son Voltish.
