"Death Songs for the Living" is coming out on Halloween, but the monsters and demons here are real, and the chills you get while listening will last way longer than your candy buzz.
Instead of ghouls and goblins, the haunting here is courtesy of real life -- it doesn't get more real than, say, silicosis, or nicotine, or a jealous lover. With Gob Iron, Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt) and Anders Parker (Varnaline) revisit some mighty dark American folk standards, but probably none most folks (this reviewer included) have heard of. The lyrics and/or melodies are tweaked, which would explain why the songs feel both classic and modern at the same time.
The stories that unfold are like a "Spoon River Anthology" set to music. The characters are dead (or about to be), and each has a fascinating story told with the kind of starkness only old folk songs can pull off.
Farrar and Parker keep their treatments of the songs similarly stark, kicking things off with some acappella harmony leading into "Death's Black Train," which pretty much sets the mood for the whole CD. Many of the songs, including the haunting (in both the sense of scary and persistent) "Hills of Mexico," are carried by a jangly acoustic guitar over mournful electric, with just one voice -- about an equal split between Farrar and Parker -- telling the tale.
The only break from the creepy echo-of-the-past feeling is the more amped up, upbeat "Buzz and Grind," the album's closer. It's a modern take on a classic format: the protest song. It focuses not so much on specifics as on the fact that "it's gonna take patience" (and time, and action) to "make the story different," on a scale both personal and global. It's a new song with an old, weathered feel, which makes it feel right at home with its more aged predecessors on the album.
With this relatively tame (but by no means weak) protest song, perhaps the most controversial element of "Death Songs" is its structure. Each track is separated by an "Interlude," each on average about a minute in length. They are mellow guitar ditties, for the most part, beautiful and interesting, but seemingly unrelated to the tracks before and after. At first I thought they were filler and I sort of rolled my eyes at them. But on subsequent listens of the album start to finish, I realized they act almost like palate-cleansers, giving you a moment to digest the previous, plot- and character-heavy song, perhaps, and maybe keeping things from getting too dark. It's unorthodox, definitely, but it kind of works.
So with Halloween almost here and a fall chill firmly in the air, the mood is perfect for "Death Songs for the Living." There's no blood or gore (well, actually, there is, but not in as great detail as on your weirdo neighbor's jack-o-lantern ...), but there's plenty of spine-tingle, and you can enjoy the shuddery goodness long after you've eaten all the Reese's Cups.
Interesting that you mention "Spoon River Anthology". "SPA" inspired Richard Buckner's "The HIll". I know Buckner is often compared to Farrar, but when I heard this disc I thought, hmm, sounds like Buckner. If you want a Buckner disc go buy "The Hill'. If you want a Farrar disc this isn't the place to start.
Fun fact: Gob iron is Brit slang for harmonica, not to be confused with bog iron which is impure iron deposits that develop in bogs or swamps.

They seem so natural and part of the whole mood...plus it's kind of cool because it makes the switches between singers a little smoother. Farrar morphs into Parker and then morphs back again instead of cold stopping and starting.
Also, can I just say, Jay Farrar could sing the Phone Book and it would still be bliss.

Silcosis Blues is my fav and reminds me in some strangely familiar manner of Moonshiner, a song that still grips me to this day.

Estou no último ano de Design na faculdade de belas artes de lisboa, mas, embora não tenha nada a ver com o curso que estou a tirar, tenho uma grande paixão pela biologia marinha, e já pensei várias vezes em tirar o curso de Biologia Marinha quando acabar o que estou a frequentar. Sei que vai ser dificil mas eu estou disposta a tentar.
