My top 10.
Posted by Hal Bogerd at November 13, 2006 1:01 AMJudging the top 10 discs of the year can be a real challenge, subjective and rarely definitive. I tend to end up thinking whatever I listen to came out this year. Is anyone interested in my top 10 discs of 1999-2006? No? Me neither!
Making a list of top 10 artists would usually be just as subjective as a year's top 10 discs list. How could I compile a completely objective list of what I've been listening to? I joined the iTUNEs generation......this year, maybe it was last year. It may have been 2004. iTUNES has a feature "play count". Simple, who gets played the most. No opinion. No guesswork. I ignored the individual songs/albums and complied a list of who I listen to.
Time to check (I hope this isn't embarrassing):
Chris Hickey
Laura Cantrell
Lucinda Williams
Al Green
Alejandro Escovedo
Jon Dee Graham
Cowboy Junkies
Jay Farrar
Josh Ritter
Peter Case
Notes/Caveats: Above is a list of my top ten played artists. If an artist appeared multiple times he/she only gets listed once. This doesn't count truck listening time, home stereo, work or Anne's taste in tunes (Cowboy Junkies sneaking into the top ten). No, it isn't a perfect system. It is what it is. What are you listening to bloggers and readers?
Apologies, in advance, to Sean.
The number one most played song on my iTunes hasn't changed in two years... it's so far ahead it might never change -- Wagon Wheel by OCMS.
Posted by: larry at November 13, 2006 8:13 AMOkay, I checked the iTunes play count on the computer here at work. Here's the top 10 artists:
-Alejandro Escovedo
-George Thorogood & the Destroyers
-Wilco
-Golden Smog
-Drive By Truckers
-Johnny Cash
-Jonathan Richman (a bit misleading - it's his Monologue about Bermuda)
-Leroi Brothers
-Alex Chilton
and number ten...
-Charlie Robison
Thanks anonymous. I'll make up Larry's 2-10 artists if he doesn't post it soon since he didn't really answer the question.
Posted by: Hal at November 14, 2006 3:58 PMMy list is a bit misleading due to the fact that I only started using iTunes last August, but regardless, here goes:
Wilco
Scott Miller
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion
My Morning Jacket
Keith Gattis
Mary Gauthier
Kathleen Edwards
Josh Rouse
Fred Eaglesmith
Kings of Leon
Here they are, and bear in mind that there was a bit of a statistical anamoly a year or so ago where some of these playcounts got inflated... hence most of the stuff I've listened to in the past year aren't registering.
1) Old Crow Medicine Show
2) Rilo Kiley
3) The V-Roys
4) The White Stripes
5) Wilco
6) Gillian Welch
7) Roman Candle
8) Neko Case
9) The Flaming Lips
10) Chatham County Line
