Soundkeeper Recordings Releases First Album: "Lift" by Work of Art
Posted by Larry Karnowski at December 5, 2006 10:30 AMA friend of the site, Barry Diament, wrote me to brag about the first record release from his new company, Soundkeeper Recordings. Congratulations, Barry! I hope it does well.

Hi friends, I am very happy to say that on December 1, "2006", a long-held dream became a reality. Soundkeeper Recordings is proud to present our first release: Work of Art's "Lift".
Ever since I first became a professional audio engineer, I've wanted records that contain more of the feeling I get at a live performance, in the presence of the musicians. There is no argument against the convenience modern recording studios and techniques offer and there is a long legacy of magical recordings that could not have been created any other way. In contrast however, when a group of players get together to make some music, live, in real time, the sounds they create are very different from those the same players would create in a recording studio.
On two separate occasions, the members of Art Halperin's band, Work of Art, drove up to meet at a church in the deep woods of upstate New York. Each time, they spent the day sharing the unique camaraderie of those who play Art's music and performing his tunes for the microphone array and you, the listener.
"Lift" was made with all the musicians playing live, in real time (as will be the case with all Soundkeeper Recordings). The musicians determined the musical balances and musical dynamics. They were recorded directly to stereo. There were no overdubs. There were no mixes. We call it "recording without a net".

Posted by: larry at December 5, 2006 5:21 PMWow...very impressive. Even in an mp3 format on my little speakers at work, the quality of that recording is easily recognizable. The stringed instruments are crisp and clear, the vocals have a slight reverb that creates a picture of the room in your mind, and the percussion sounds like it's inside my head. And I'm very impressed that you are offering a 24/96 recording, very cool...try listening to that on your iPods all you Apple freaks (just kidding) ;) Anyway, very nice job Barry, thank God there are some folks out there who are sick of overpolished, overcompressed music.
