Top 40 American Artists Working Today

Posted by Justin Gage at December 6, 2006 7:00 AM

This past month An Aquarium Drunkard was asked to participate in Information Leafblower's 4th annual "Top 40 Bands In America" feature. It turns out I was supposed to send in my top ten picks, but I misread the instructions and sent in a list of who I felt were the most interesting top forty American artists working today. Anyhow, I now have a list of my present favorite music-makers in the U.S.A.

First, be sure to read Information Leafblower's list here. It is comprised of nominations from 24 different audio blogs. Not surprisingly, my top 40 list is vastly different from the one that made the final cut over on Leafblower so I thought it would be interesting to compare the two. Note, my submissions were not rated 1,2,3,4, etc, but is just a (current) list of my favorite American artists working today (Read: glaring omissions such as Steve Earle/Lucinda Williams, etc. are due to lack of output of late.)

Here it is, exactly as sent to Leafblower, below. Have at it...who did I leave off that you love...hate...despise, etc. Oh, and yes, I'm well aware the Decemberists are omitted...though they almost made the 40 mark. Also, Look for the official Aquarium Drunkard Year In Review next month.

Justin Timberlake? You just threw that one in to see if we were *really* reading, right? Please?

And very cool including Eef Barzelay! I love Clem Snide!

I just don't "get" My Morning Jacket. To me, "Z" was a snooze fest. Funny, I still have TV On The Radio's CD in the plastic. I was going to bring it back...maybe I should give it a listen.

Josh Ritter, Richard Buckner, Richard Thompson, Jon Dee Graham, Alejandro Escovedo?

Not to nitpick, (well, OK, it's nitpicking) but to say you're excluding Steve Earle because of lack of output, yet include Wilco doesn't seem consistent. A Ghost is Born came out in 2004, as did Revolution Starts Now. In the past five years, both Wilco and Earle have only put out two studio albums each.

Other than that and Justin Timberlake (and I'm only complaining because Steve Earle would be near the top of my list) good stuff. Looove Brendan Benson. I've been a fan since One Mississippi.

I checked out Leafblower's list. Blah.

Joanna Newson's Ys on any best of list? N! Good stuff if you think Yoko Ono backed by a harp would be cool.

How about Jim Lauderdale ? Buddy Miller ? Marty Stuart ? Todd Snider ?

Posted by: Rob at December 6, 2006 11:38 AM

Reckless Kelly? Chris Knight? Jackie Greene? Josh Rouse?

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a list that lacks Jim Lauderdale,Solomon Burke, Bonnie Raitt, or any Chris Thiele incarnation (including Nickel Creek, doomed as they are) seems kinda lonesome to me. But music is subjective, and you have good reasons for hangin' it out there, so preach on.

I'm still waiting for the Timberlake explanation...

Posted by: trey at December 6, 2006 4:01 PM

"Timberlake Explanation" Good name for a punk band.

Posted by: Hal at December 6, 2006 4:40 PM

funny you should say that, i have a tattoo that says "Timberlake Explanation"

Posted by: trey at December 6, 2006 4:43 PM

My tattoo says "Justin Timberlake Explanation Part Two".

In three-inch block letters.

I won't say where.

Posted by: Jim Pipkin at December 6, 2006 5:17 PM

But in a cold shower it just says "Jo"...

Posted by: Jim Pipkin at December 6, 2006 5:18 PM

Don't call me when it says "Justin Timberlake Explanation Part Twooooooooooooooooo".

Posted by: Hal at December 6, 2006 7:30 PM

trey, the timberlake album and production are both great.

per the artists listed, this list would have been different a year ago, and will most definitly be very different a year from now.

like the blog, it's just an extension of what I am listening to in the here and now.

Well, it sure stirred up a bunch of ruckus, Justin! Job well done! ;-)

Posted by: larry at December 6, 2006 10:52 PM

and i didn't mean any offense, justin, and i kinda see where you are coming from. Timberlake DOES seem to be garnering up some artist credibility and if he can do something, ANYTHING, important for the pop genre, then more power to him.

Posted by: trey at December 6, 2006 11:33 PM

Well, he is bringing sexy back, so there's gotta be something to say for that...

Posted by: Waylon at December 7, 2006 10:51 AM

What does that mean? "He's bringing sexy back?" I don't know even know what that means. I mean, shit, I've been right here for as long as I can remember. ;-)
