King's Americana Revisted
Posted by James Goodfellow at December 12, 2006 8:49 PMYou may remember that I mentioned an article in Entertainment Weekly a few months back about Stephen King's Americana leanings. If you don't remember, here's the link. Go ahead and read it...I'll wait...
Back? Ok, great!. So it appears that His Creepiness is at it once again. This time he's using his column in Entertainment Weekly to list off his musical top 10 for the year. I'm happy to report that he includes some really good stuff. Tied for the number 10 position is Hank III's "My Drinkin' Problem" and Scott Miller's "Drunk All Around This Town". What's really interesting with this choice is that the Scott Miller tune he listed is an unreleased song. To my knowledge, the only place you can find it is in the live music archive at Archive.org. Nevertheless, mega-kudos to King for having come across this one. I hope now that Scott will put the song on his next album. Also making an appearance on the list are Johnny Cash, the Bottle Rockets and the Derailers.
In other Hollywood-meets-Americana news, here's one that even Stephen King couldn't have dreamed up. It appears that Hollywood It-Girl Scarlett Johansson will be recording an album in the near future. Except, instead of an album full of trite and forgettable pop fluff, she'll be tackling the work of Tom Waits. She's actually recording an ENTIRE ALBUM of Tom Waits material. I know, it sounds like story ripped straight from The Onion. I'm a fairly new fan of Waits' material, so I actually look forward to hearing how this turns out.
I'm betting Ryan Adams plays on Scarlett Johansson's new disc.
Posted by: Hal at December 12, 2006 11:23 PMI have very low expectations for the Johansson disc.
Posted by: larry at December 13, 2006 8:05 AMLow expectations mean that your resentments will be small, Larry. Expectations are after all merely resentments under construction...
Posted by: Jim Pipkin at December 13, 2006 10:06 AMI don't care what you guys think. Scarlett Johannson just became that much hotter to me.
Posted by: Dusty Bear at December 13, 2006 10:53 AMAmen, Brother Dusty. Amen.
Posted by: Shane O. at December 13, 2006 3:38 PMWhat do you guys think of David Johansen?

Umm, I really liked the New York Dolls. But can't say as much about Buster Poindexter, or Dolls Pt. 2, for that matter.
