Sad Ballads and Bad Salads
Posted by Hal Bogerd at January 9, 2007 8:18 PMPeter Holsapple played a very special show at the Broad Street Café (located in Durham, NC) this past Sunday evening. The early show started around 5PM with a short set for kids.
A good-sized crowd of over one hundred people showed up with ages ranging from 1 to uh, 50? Peter enchanted the younger crowd with songs, banter and readings. A couple of college-age pseudo hipsters were taken aback when they walked into the truly "all ages" club. One of them turned to the other and remarked "There are kids and stuff in here". I almost remember my pre-Dad days when I might have said something stupid like that!
The real treat came during the second (adult) set. Peter basically played a solo acoustic "Best of the dB's" set (clarification: from the Holsapple led The Sound of Music/Like This era dB's) including "This Could Be The Day" and "Lonely Is As Lonely Does". Peter covered the country standard "Satisfied Mind" and treated the appreciative crowd to a new dB's track "World to Cry". He ended the set crooning "Moon River". A wonderful set, and a unique opportunity to see a very talented singer/songwriter! A special thanks to the Broad Street Café for sponsoring this unique kids and adults friendly no-cover charge show.
Note #1: Peter, like many many other people, was unfortunately driven from his home in New Orleans by Katrina. I'm proud to say Peter and his family have. at least temporarily. made Durham their home.
Note #2: Thank you to Peter for the title to the blog. The "bad salad" has NOTHING to do with anything sold at the Broad Street Café-Peter used the phrase during a song introduction. I borrowed it.
Note #3: Peter Holsapple will be doing it again at 5PM on Sunday January 21st. Be there if you can (and be sure to take the kids)!
