Age Discrimination on Music Row

Posted by James Goodfellow at January 12, 2007 7:50 AM

I know, it sounds impossible right? I thought it was just pure coincidence that all real talent in Nashville shows up in a fit, twenty-something package. Anyway, 50's and 60's country star Stonewall Jackson is suing the country music showcase for $10 million, claiming that the Opry has "kept him off the stage" because of his age - he's 74. Apparently he was told by Pete Fisher, the Opry's General Manager that "I don't want any gray hairs on that stage or in the audience, and before I'm done there won't be any," and, "You're too old and too country." Of course, Fisher and Opry parent-company Gaylord Entertainment are disputing this and claim that they've cut back on his appearances due to scheduling problems.

In my opinion, the Opry's just gone downhill ever since they fired that Williams boy...but what do I know.

In related news, Stonewall Jackson is himself being sued by a long-dead Confederate General for trademark infringement. Stay tuned for more details.

They want young, foolish performers to attract a young, foolish audience...who else will shell out a hundred bucks a ticket to hear a five-piece bar band??

You'd have to name it something else - "Uncle Bubba's Hair Rejuvenator", or "Old Confederate's Gray-B-Gone"...

They did it to Johnny Cash and regretted it. They recently did it to Porter Wagner and they will regret that as well (bless you Marty Stuart!) Music Row is a non-televised American Idol.
