Commitment

When do you decide to stop buying a former favorite artist's latest release? I'll buy every Dave Alvin, John Hiatt, Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely or Richard Thompson release-no question. Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Springsteen? I'm still interested but I'm wavering, not quite ready to give up (yet). Newcomers Josh Ritter and Sally Spring are a lock (for their next couple releases-hopefully more). I'm not looking to embarass anyone by naming names of the ones I divorced-we just grew apart!

So here's the question. Which musician's career have you followed the longest without any gaps in your CD/vinyl/cassette/8-track collection? For me it has to be Richard Thompson from his first solo disc "Henry The Human Fly" to the more recent "1000 Years of Popular Music" and the "Grizzly Man" soundtrack (I never even saw the movie!).

My first long-term commitment music-wise was R.E.M. They were also my first major disappointment as our musical tastes diverged.

I think Ryan Adams is mine. I bought all his stuff the day it came out (even when I had to do it in Tokyo and pay $30 for one CD!) from "Heartbreaker" through "29." But I'm done now. I *might* buy his future stuff, but I'll have to listen and decide first. He's lost his automatic pass, I'm afraid.

I hung in with Joni Mitchell even when she ventured way past quirky and the cigarettes forced her into lower registers. Finally, I forgot to notice when she came out with new stuff.

Tom Waits. The moment I first heard him, on Raindogs, naturally, I ran out and picked up every damn album he had done before. Haven't stopped since, including any bootlegs, whether it be of him sneezing or pounding the same key on the piano for an hour straight. The Pogues and Uncle Tupelo/Farrar/Tweedy come a close second.
