New releases: March 6, 2007

Brothers and sisters, next Tuesday is the holiest day of the year for those of us bathed in the light of The Glorious Church of Jay Farrar.

Yea, though we sin, though we sometimes rock out to "Sexy Back" when we're alone in the car and pretty sure no one's looking, the Glorious Jay has chosen to be a benevolent Jay and give unto us His latest gospel, "The Search." It is said that this gospel shall contain less twang than those previous, and even some verses with a horn section, surely also Glorious. But I, for one, have faith in the Jay, that He shall lead us in a new direction without miring us in suck. That he shall smile upon us even as we puzzle over His experimental ways. That He shall lead us ever toward his Glorious, ass-rocking light. Amen.

New releases for the week of March 6:
Son Volt -- The Search (Red Ink)

That is all.

OK.

Fine.

There are more, some actually quite excellent. Not necessarily holy or glorious, but, you know, good. So here are those:

Mary Chapin Carpenter -- The Calling (Zoe)
George Jones -- 40 Years of Duets (Time Life)
Arcade Fire -- Neon Bible (Merge)
Ry Cooder -- My Name is Buddy (Nonesuch)
Really interesting-sounding concept album in which Cooder revisits his "Dustbowl song" style, with new songs told through three characters -- a cat, a mouse, and a toad. Sounds dangerously close to cheesy, I agree, but if anyone can pull it off ...
The Greencards -- Viridian (Dualtone)
Albert Hammond Jr. -- Yours to Keep (New Line)
A solo offering from the Strokes guitarist, and yes, he's the son of THAT Albert Hammond ("It Never Rains In Southern California" -- have fun getting that theme out of your head.)
The Moaners -- Blackwing Yalobusha (Yep Roc)
A new band made up of former members of Trailer Bride.
various artists -- HighTone Anthology: Rockin' From The Roots (Time Life)
A vault raid of the roots label's 25 years of history. Artists on the two-disc set include Dave Alvin, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Julie and Buddy Miller, Dick Dale, the Blasters, Chris Smither, Heather Myles and Hot Club of Cowtown.

Comments

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed in the new Greencards album. It really didn't improve on the first two, and after an initial listen, really didn't grab my ear. I'm hoping a second (or third) listen will change my mind.

Minor point: The Moaners put out a disc in 2005 titled "Dark Snack" and have played around the Triangle for several years.
