New releases: May 15, 2007

It's hardly something to complain about, but after a nice two weeks in my homeland that included a glorious Merlefest and a trip to my beloved Horizon Records, I'm up to my eyeballs in great new music to listen to. So what I don't need -- what my credit card don't need -- is to follow that up with a week chock full o' must-have new releases. Good GOD, ya'll.

But that's precisely what we have here, and between the new Wilco, Avett Brothers and Rufus Wainwright offerings, I'm pretty much beside myself. In a good way.

New releases of note for the week of May 15 -- hope you're sitting:
The Avett Brothers -- Emotionalism (Ramseur)
Wilco -- Blue Sky Blue (Nonesuch)
Rufus Wainwright -- Release the Stars (Geffen)
Dry Branch Fire Squad -- Thirtieth Anniversary Special (Rounder)
Richard Shindell -- South of Delia (self-released)
Ian Hunter -- Shrunken Heads (Yep Roc)
Get a nice little preview from HW.org's own Hal right here.
Guided By Voices -- Live from Austin, Texas (New West)
Dolores O'Riordan -- Are You Listening (Sanctuary)
This is the solo foray for the former Cranberries frontwoman.
Th' Legendary Shack Shakers -- Lower Broad Lo-Fi (Arkam)
Amy LaVere -- Anchors & Anvils (Archer)
Maria Muldaur -- Naughty, Bawdy and Blue (Stony Plain)

Happy shopping! And for what it's worth, I recommend the creamy-chicken flavored ramen noodles. De-lish!

Eeek! Glaring (and unintentional) omission! I'm fixing that right now -- thanks, Hal.

I've heard several tunes off the new Wilco album and I can tell you it's quite good!

Listening to the new Wilco CD right now. Some quick notes..."Either Way" is so easy on the ears, like an audio breeze that just whisks you away. What a nice way to open an album. "You Are My Face" starts out with a very jangly, lightly strummed rhythm guitar against a lazy vocal delivery and some reverby guitar fills. Then, at the 1:30 mark, it kicks in HARD with some fuzzy, overdriven guitar. Wow, what a transition! I must have listened to it 4 times already.

and kicks in HARD at the 1:30 mark.

Oops, a typo at the end...
