Why "Best Of" doesn't really work for me...
Posted by Jim Pipkin at May 28, 2007 5:58 PMI know that the music biz is list-driven. The Top Ten, the Charts, and all those award shows feverishly vying for our attention, struggling to put THEIR choice out there in front.
Every critic (including us'n here at HW, I'm as guilty as the rest) putting out annual picks, choices, ad infinitum.
Let me explain why, IMHO, this is all a load of horse manure that is hip-deep and getting deeper.
Music is not a science, it is an art. It is subjective. No two people hear a song the same way, or get the same message out of it, or have it dredge up the same memories, emotions, or attitudes.
Let's face it - the music we hear, even the indie music, has passed through a pretty rigorous filtering process before we ever hear it. There are tens of thousands of songwriters in America alone, penning
hundreds of thousands of songs every year. Many of these are dumpster-bound, but many, many thousands are good, solid, honest expressions.
But if the writer is not lucky enough to be a performer, or have access to one, the songs rot. If the performer who takes those songs is not successful enough at promotion, the songs rot. If, even after successful promotion, the touring band can't hold it together long enough to land a decent publishing deal, the songs rot. And if that lucky touring band with a decent record deal manages to piss off the wrong people in the industry, the songs DEFINITELY rot.
Personally, I think this sucks. There has to be a better way to get great music noticed than to plug it onto a list somewhere, or stage elaborate awards ceremonies based on the decisions made by some blue ribbon panel with their own agenda and circle of buds.
That is why I write for HW, as time allows. I've been very fortunate with my own music, found enough investors to keep it going, and gotten support from arts groups in my home state that "hear" what I'm trying to do. It ain't bling time here on the farm, but recent photos prove that we ain't starving.
I seek the less fortunate.
Any ideas? Rants? Suggestions of original artists who deserve notice here but have not been given proper attention? Why do you admire them, and where are they playing?

I think there are some positive changes a-comin', thanks largely to the Internets.
XM, for example, has (or at least once had -- not sure if it's still around) a station for unsigned artists. My impression was, if you sent it in, it had a good shot of being played there a time or two -- with your name and song title in lights on the receiver display. And Internet radio stations -- may they survive -- are bucking the payola bullshit and playing what they want, which is usually more than a 20-song playlist and is for the most part not influenced by advertisers, huge corporations, etc.
Me, I like lists. But I tend to dismiss ones from the "machine" and gravitate instead toward ones made by other artists, or perhaps friends or bloggers whose tastes I've come to trust. Lists are just easy to digest, I reckon, and there's gotta be some help to wade through all the masses, unfortunately.

Most people simply do not have the time and/or patience to seek out and digest alot of new music. Hence the fact that people rely on lists to expedite the process. I know and trust y'all here at HW to recommend music to me because we have similar tastes.

In a perfect world, all the artists I love would be rich and famous, playing places like the Allhell Pavilion and I wouldn't have to go see them in dive bars for a $10 ticket............wait a minute........nevermind....forget I said that.
PS: Speaking of "best of lists", I still don't like the last Dylan disc.
Posted by: Hal at May 29, 2007 8:32 PMI think if there is anything positive to say for best of lists, it's that it allows someone who hasn't really developed their music palate to start with some bites that are a little easier to swallow. Take, for instance, Larry's write up of Radiohead last year. I think a lot of people probably benefited from that because they are definitely a lot to stomach if you don't know where to start. Every greatest hits album that I've seen has at least a couple of songs that weren't big hits or aren't as newbie friendly as the rest, and those are the ones that may spur people to explore a little more. Also, at least in Atlanta, there seems to be a growing interest in little bars with "no name" artists...couple that with sites like allmusic.com and radio stations like Tennessee's own WDVX, I'm hoping that the days of MTV and Sony are slowly being drained of their power...but then again, maybe I'm just an optimist.

However, I'm always searching for new and interesting music so if I happen to get turned onto an artist that I haven't heard of that turns up on one of these lists, so be it.
As far as "Greatest Hits" collections, I think they have a valid place in music. Ask Waylon, I have an extensive music collection, but there are just some artists that have such a large body of work that it's difficult to digest it all when it spans x number of albums. Case in point, James Brown. I have always loved James Brown but there is no way in h*ll that I'd go out and buy his umpteen albums just to have the songs I'd like to hear. On the other hand, I bought Toad The Wet Sprocket's GHs and loved it so much that I plan to buy their proper albums to get more of a good band.

Terhune- So I bought a couple of CD's from cdbaby.com because I liked what I heard. The music is what I would call Pacific Northwest twang. It's got some Son Volt, Wilco qualities though not as commercial, and lots more twangy. Just what I love! So a week later, I get this email from the artist himself, Allen Terhune, and it thanked me for purchasing his CD's and offered to send me some of his latest stuff for free. So I sent back my address, and he sent me a box set of 4 cd's of his newer stuff. Folksy, pedal steel, with some fiddle, great stuff, and I have been a fan ever since. I don't know a lot about him, or the music, but from I have read, he is one of the better pedal steel players in the US.
Another northwest artist I came across was Gerald Collier and his Unreleased Country Record. There's some great eclectic country music, with some excellent lyrics. It's been a year now, and it's still heavy in my rotation. Check out the song: the least I could do, one of the better Americana songs I have heard in awhile.
Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer- I don't think I ever hear his stuff on the radio, and that probably has something to do with him being deceased. But he has a lot of great stuff, one of the most underrated folk songwriters in my opinion. I just picked up the latest released album this year, Seven, and so far it tops my best of 2007 list.
Fred Eaglesmith – The best way to experience Fred is to see him live, and unfortunately that's not something I have been able to do for a few years. But from his website, you can buy a live uncut concert from Texas that gives a pretty good representation of Fred's music. He's' a great songwriter that's never really gotten his due. Good folk country combination.
Kim Beggs I just started listening to her stuff this year, and I all I can say, shes got a unique voice, maybe not for everyone, but I love her stuff, and there's great steel guitar work on the albums I have.
Richard Shindell, theres not many artists who can bring me to tears, but on his latest album, Vuelta, two songs Mavis, and the Last fare of the day, do that. He can evoke so much emotion without saying a lot.
