New releases: June 5, 2007

Some interesting "project" albums out next week, including a tribute to June Carter Cash, a collection of Marty Stuart duets, and Bruce Springsteen exploring his folky side (along with other sides) in Ireland. Add to the mix releases from snappy-dresser Porter Wagoner and Sir Paul McCartney, and you could also call it Legends Week. Let's get right to it.

Notable new releases for the week of June 5:

various artists -- Anchored in Love: A Tribute to June Carter Cash (Dualtone)
This album, produced by June & Johnny's boy John Carter Cash, brings together folks from all over the country music spectrum. Willie Nelson sings with Sheryl Crow, Carlene Carter with Ronnie Dunn (as in "Brooks &"), Billy Bob Thornton with the Peasall Sisters. And Elvis Costello takes on "Ring Of Fire." Maybe the oddnesses work, and maybe they don't, but I'm definitely going to check it out, because it's all too interesting to overlook!

Marty Stuart -- Compadres: An Anthology of Duets (Hip-O)
Culled from all over his vast, long career, this anthology features the Mighty Mulleted One's work with Steve Earle, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Connie Smith, B.B. King and Mavis Staples and, on two never-before-released tracks, with Old Crow Medicine Show and Miss Loretta Lynn.

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band -- Live In Dublin (Sony)
Two discs (and, a separate-purchase DVD) chronicle The Boss's three-night stay in Dublin, mostly featuring Pete Seeger Sessions tracks as well as some non-mainstream back catalog selections.

Porter Wagoner -- Wagonmaster (Anti)
Produced by the aforementioned Marty Stuart -- man, to have been a fly on the wall for those recording sessions!

Paul McCartney -- Memory Almost Full (Hear Music)
I can't get the song "Ever Present Past," this album's second track, out of my head. In a good way.

David Olney -- One Tough Town (Red Parlor)

matt pond PA -- If You Want Blood [EP] (Altitude)

I'm a $pring$teen fan but how much is he going to milk the "$eeger $e$$ion$" for?
The original release, the extended edition, this double cd live set and a DVD?
Blah.

i agree with Hal. At what point do we as music fans begin to call a spade a spade, and recognize how shameless this whole seegar sessions deal has become? not to mention the fact that Bruce heralds himself America's working-class poet-songwriter. Irony.

So, what's the deal with the new McCartney release? I heard it's being released through Starbucks' label? If so, what is this world coming to???
