Show Gram some love!

Posted by Stacy Chandler at June 1, 2007 9:30 AM

We here at HickoryWind.org are about as diverse politically as you can get, but every now and then an issue comes along that gets us riled up and ready to agitate as one.

The issue at hand, friends, is the appalling fact (news to me!) that Gram Parsons is not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Maybe for some time he was too, um, cosmic for the straights who make Hall of Fame decisions, but now his contribution to country music can't be denied -- it's hard to find a respected country artist who came after him who DOESN'T cite Gram as an influence.

So c'mon, Country Music Hall of Fame, do the right thing.

Fired up? We've learned of a petition (not started by HW.org) on this very matter just waiting for your (virtual) signature. Won't you help this worthy cause?

I sined it, way past time they brought him in.

I signed it too (of course), but I must admit that form page was a bit scary... Asked a lot of questions that are actually optional. Be careful what you type in, but definitely sign!

I just signed it too. He's not in the Hall of Fame, but he is mentioned in the museum, which is something at least, I guess.

With pleasure!

I was just at the CMHoF a few weeks back and don't know if I missed something critical or what, but...it was hard to tell who has actually been inducted into the Hall.

Lots of cool exhibits, video, music (of course), but I must have missed the Official List somewhere along the way.

Gram was definitely mentioned, and of course his Nudie suit is on display (which warmed my heart), but in missing whatever part I missed, it was difficult to tell that he wasn't an official member.

And insofar as that goes, in terms of memorabilia on display and folks that merit mention, I was absolutely thrilled to see Rusty Young's 4-neck (am I remembering this right? was it really 4?) pedal steel on display. Talk about a guy that had some real impact--he's high on my list (after Gram, of course) of folks that ought to be in that ain't.

And this is just an assumption that he ain't, since if you recall, I missed that part of the HoF...

This NRA member put his name down too.

Since I'm too lazy to look it up..........is Gram Parsons in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I know the Byrds are in but does that count for Gram?

Posted by: Hal at June 3, 2007 9:07 AM

Looks like the Byrds are in, yeah, and the little bio on the Rock hall's Web site mentions Gram as the impetus for the band's foray into country-rock, but I don't think Gram himself is in that hall, either.

WTF??

Did anyone verify that Ingram Cecil Connor III is not a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame?

Posted by: Hal at June 3, 2007 9:24 PM

I didn't see that incarnation of Gram on the Country Hall list, either.

I also tried to verify with the Country Hall that Gram met their requirements for induction, but I received no response.

Posted by: stacy at June 3, 2007 10:15 PM

UPDATE: The Country Hall of Fame responded ... but referred me to the Country Music Association, which is the entity actually doing the inducting.

Here are the CMA criteria for Hall of Fame consideration: http://www.cmaawards.com/2006/hof/criteria.asp

Gram's got #5 tied up, but stodgy #8 or #9, sadly, are where I suspect the holdup might be.

Thanks for the link Stacy. I really like the Everly Brothers but what are they doing in the Country Music Hall of Fame!?

Posted by: Hal at June 4, 2007 8:13 PM

If Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson can get in despite requirements 8 and 9, then Gram should be there, too.

"Lots of cool exhibits, video, music (of course), but I must have missed the Official List somewhere along the way."

The actual hall of fame is after the museum, it's a large circular room with plaques all around the wall and a high glass ceiling. I guess you must've missed it, 'cause you'd know it if you'd been in there. It's right in front of you as you leave the museum, before you go down the stairs to the exit.

Here's a photo I found via google:

I don't think it is just #8 and 9. There are a lot of people yet to get into the HOF that have done a great deal more to forward country music, as opposed to say, 60's era country rock crossover. One could certainly argue for Allman Brothers or Little Feat for their derivational music that bridged from country. Doing Louvin Brothers songs was a great help to make people aware of country roots, but it does not per se make someone a HOF candidate. The tragedy is that Gram didn't live long enough- and one can argue why that was- to cinch home the impact that only a very few have carried to this day.

Hello everyone, and thanks for signing, if you did. I'm the guy that started the petition. I totally agree with Dusty Bear above, and that's a point that needs to be made. I don't at all understand the previous comment from Mike; I worship the Allman Bros. and Little Feat (especially) too, but to imply that Gram was "crossover" is very wrong and misses the point completely, and implies that I'm not doing my best at getting the message across. Alabama was actually inducted two years ago; what's that all about? Gram led the entire movement, head on, Nudie suits and all, to bring *real* country back to us all -- at a time when "crossover" was in fact destroying it (to the point it is today). Off the soap box, thanks again, and if you haven't signed, once again: http://www.atticweb.com/gramparsons. Paste Magazine will have a short interview with me in the August issue (cutting my answers to shreds so I'll post them elsewhere), did an interview on Sirius Radio, and a few others. And thank you all for doing hickorywind.org!

Will, thanks for getting this started! If there's anything else we can do, just let us know!

Yes, with Emmylou just being chosen for the CMHOF and giving Gram the credit for helping her find her voice, it is absurd he is not in there!
