New releases: June 12, 2007

What's this? Next week's release of Toby Keith's "Big Dog Daddy," so appropriately on a label called Show Dog Nashville, isn't enough for you? Good lord, people! What more can you possibly want??

Maybe something from this list of next week's notable new releases, you demanding bastards:

Cherryholmes -- Cherryholmes II: Black and White (Skaggs Family)
... in which, if the cover art is to be believed, the bluegrass darlings go all death metal on us. Or pair up with Meatloaf. Or something. Hoping the content is better than the packaging.

Sarah Borges -- Diamond in the Dark (Sugar Hill)

Abra Moore -- On the Way (Sarathan)

Paula Cole -- Courage (Decca)

Mark Olson -- Salvation Blues (Hacktone)
It's the Victoria Williams breakup album. But it's also about reunions, kind of. Fellow Jayhawk Gary Louris appears on three of the album's tracks.

The Traveling Wilburys -- The Traveling Wilburys (Rhino)
A two-CD, one-DVD set reissuing the Wilbury's two albums (how on earth did they ever go out of print!?) and adding some extra goodies.

Two incredible things...

1) IT'S ABOUT FRICKIN' TIME THEY RE-RELEASED THE WILBURIES! I will, of course, be buying one of these! And how!

2) Whoa... I really hope that isn't the real Cherryholmes album art. Talk about surreal, and, umm... crappy. Yes, crappy. I loved their first album cover, very tasteful and elegant with the cherry dealio... awesome. But this new one looks like a bad Metallica parody. With fiddles and banjos. Yikes.

I think the reason why it went out of print and took so long to come back into print had something to do with the estates of some of the deceased band members.

Anyway, I bought Vol. 1 for my wife years ago off of eBay because I couldn't find it anywhere! I think I paid good money for it too (>$20) because she just absolutely adores it. When I saw that Rhino was putting together a nice set like this, I had to order it for her. I wonder what the second album sounds like? I don't know anyone that's ever even heard it. Most people I talked to think they only put out one.

Didn't they put out Vol 1, which was the big hit, and then Vol 3? They skipped Vol 2 if I remember correctly...

Volume 2 was a widely circulated bootleg of outtakes/demos.

Yep, Vol. 1 followed by Vol. 3.

Toby Keith has always been a dog in my book.

I just got the Wilburys set and while I haven't yet listened to Vols. 1 & 3 (I hope the remastering came out alright), the set comes with an excellent "fly on the wall" DVD that chronicles the making of Vol. 1. It's an really interesting watch. You can tell how much those guys enjoyed the music making process.
