Happy Father's Day!
Posted by Stacy Chandler at June 17, 2007 8:10 AMWe'd like to give a HickoryWind.org shout-out to dear old dads everywhere -- heck, a few among us ARE dads now.
Curiously, just as a Johnny Cash song sprang to my mind on Mother's Day, The Man In Black is on my in-head playlist today, too, for Father's Day.
The song? "A Boy Named Sue," of course! Not because my dad is named Sue, mind you, but because the song reminds us that sometimes dads have to employ tough love in order to teach our punk asses a lesson. Hopefully, his tough love is somewhat less tough than giving us embarrassing names, but you see where I'm going with this.
There have been whole albums recorded (Rosanne Cash, Poe, etc. etc.) with the theme of mourning a father who's passed away, and plenty of songs (um, entire nu-metal genre) about dads who done us wrong. And, thankfully, some ode-to-Dad songs (one of my favorites is Greg Brown's "Billy from the Hills"), too. What dad songs are spinning through your mind today?
"Papa Made a Livin'" by Blue Moon Rising is one of the best dad-day songs around, IMHO. Blue Moon Rising, in case you don't know, is an up and coming Bluegrass band that is 1) very entertaining, and 2) still sounds original. They haven't gotten to that "we've made it as a Bluegrass band so we have to sound like everyone else" blandness yet.
