Finding Your Music

Posted by Hal Bogerd at June 20, 2007 11:04 PM

Everybody here at HickoryWind has excellent taste in music and I'm sure we all imagine that our children (or our imaginary children) will have the same musical taste buds and will grow to love "our" music. My son loved Tom Chapin, Doc Watson and David Holt. He moved on to Lucinda Williams (back when she didn't need to sing "f*ck" on one track on every album), Two Dollar Pistols and Flaco Jimenez. A friend gave him Flood by They Might Be Giants and he was off and running. He had a band. Not his dad's music. His music. He knows The Else is coming out July 10 and he's got his money ready! Every couple days he calls me into his room and tells me I have to hear this song and he plays me his catch-of-the day. I don't tell him I remember some of the tracks from twenty years ago! He's educating his dad to new music from his favorite band and I'm not taking that away from him. Will he ever "discover" my Whiskeytown discs? Maybe. Maybe not. He's got TMBG and he's eagerly awaiting their next release. I can't wait to take him to the store.

PS: A big thanks to Doehle for getting Jake started and to Uncle Larry for helping Jake fill out his TMBG's library.

Build a little birdhouse, in your soul!

(And while you're at it, keep the night light on inside the birdhouse in your soul.)

Larry, that might be putting too fine a point on it.
