New releases: July 10, 2007

Next week finds two fine Americana labels continuing series (serieses??) that spotlight some of the genre's best of the best.

Sugar Hill cherrypicks its catalog for it's "Americana Masters Series." Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, The Lonesome River Band, Terry Allen, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Peter Rowan and Reckless Kelly are the latest getting the "Best of the Sugar Hill Years" treatment. And New West releases two more "Austin City Limits" performances, one from Buck Owens and the other from Kinky Friedman.

But if you thirst for some (relatively) fresher blood, here's some other releases to note for the week of July 10:

Kim Richey -- Chinese Boxes (Vanguard)
If you haven't discovered Kim Richey yet, get on that. You're missing something really, really great. She's lurked in the mainstream spotlight for years as a well-respected songwriter, but she really shines when she adds her own voice to her beautiful songs. I've been a Kim Richey fan for 10 years now, and from listening to some advance tracks from this new disc, I don't anticipate my fandom waning one bit.
They Might Be Giants -- Else (Zoe)
Jason Isbell -- Sirens of the Ditch (New West)
The former Drive-by Truckers secret weapon strikes out on his own.
Fionn Regan -- The End of History (Lost Highway)
Buffalo Tom -- Three Easy Pieces (New West)
The Gourds -- Noble Creatures (Yep Roc)
Interpol -- Our Love to Admire (Capitol)
Chris and Rich Robinson -- Brothers of a Feather (Eagle)
The famously feudsome Black Crowes brothers unite onstage for a live recording of rarities, covers and acoutically treated Black Crowes fare.
Smashing Pumpkins -- Zeitgeist (Reprise)

I credit Kim Richey with turning me onto the whole Alt-Country and Americana music scene. I've been hearing some of her new songs on her MySpace page (Yes, I'm that desperate for new Kim Richey music), and I have to say, from what I can tell, this is going to be one very strong album.

New Smashing Pumpkins after all these years...I am as giddy as a little school boy. I know it isn't the typical format for, say, Hickory Wind...but I have an inside that a certain Hickory Wind contributor came up on that stuff, and also turned his friend Waylon onto it. :)
