Is everyone else as excited about Live Earth as I am? Global warming is a real issue but this isn't a real solution. Time to go listen to some bad music and sell some carbon credits to Al Gore.

Blah.

Well its raised attention to the issue hasn't it? And really isn't that a good start.

Oh and Crowded House is playing so thats nice too.

I am not at all convinced Global Warming is a "real" issue - is it as real as the "Global Cooling" issue of the 1970s?

Bad music and washed up one-note politicians, ten to one someone will have a "spiritual" experience.

i don't know about you guys, but when i see or hear Madonna, nothing screams out at me more than "unwanted excess". I think Gore is on to something.

Wow. I'm supprised by the negativity on display here. I figure a day long, 7 continent concert, would be looked at as a good thing by anyone who likes live music. 90% of the music is rather terrible but the other 10% has been cool so far.

Wether or not you actually think Global Warming is an issue or not it seems doubtful that anyone could reasonably argue that encouraging less energy consumption is a bad thing.

And like I said..Crowded House.

its not the cause I object to; it's Madonna. I hate Madonna.

Well fair play then.

Though good of her to play a benefit concert. I wonder if artists can write those performances off taxwise in some way.

Not meaning to wax cynical (well, ok, I'm gonna wax cynical entirely on purpose) most pop artists hope and pray for any "cause" that they can jump on for publicity. They are hawking their wares, same as any salesman, and the bigger the audience the better.

The object, of course, is to APPEAR to be DOING good, rather than actually BEING good, since most of these performers are entirely into conspicuous consumption at every opportunity.

Global Cooling never really caught on, but it got a nose in the tent for this latest crisis. Environmental regulation is a massive grab at everything from private property rights to the tiniest aspect of private life. And since any authority granted will ALWAYS be abused, this latest march of the lemmings poses the greatest threat to individual liberty since Kruschev pounded his shoe on the table.

well put Jim, and, like I said, I don't object to the cause; I think we can all agree that cutting energy and petroleum consumption is a good thing. But the whole thing reeks of hypocrisy. There is no need to go into examples, but what is unsaid here is "do as I say, not as I do", and that isn't going to make any kind of significant change. On the other hand, the masses will be entertained, and it is probably safe to say that there will be at least SOMEONE out there that makes a change in their lifestyle. A little bit is better than nada.
