Brush with fame (part 1)
Posted by Hal Bogerd at August 23, 2007 11:27 PMThe beat generation writers (Kerouac, Ginsburg, Burroughs, etc.) are often cited as a major inspirations and influences by many musicians. You can start with Dylan and continue to They Might Be Giants (obligatory HW musical connection).
Sometime around 1985 I attended a reading by Allen Ginsburg at the University of Houston. As showtime approached I visited the men's room. As I washed my hands I heard a scream come from a stall. The door swung open and out walked the man himself. The man who wrote in "Howl": "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night......."
He looked me in the eye and said "I just pissed a kidney stone."
I don't think I said anything.
Mr. Ginsburg gave his reading and as he left the stage I gave him a thumbs up. He nodded his head.
.........and that is today's brush with fame. Care to share yours?
Bonus musical fun fact for all you angelheaded hipsters......
The song "I Should be Allowed to Think" by They Might Be Giants opens with "I saw the best minds of my generation, destroyed by madness, starving hysterical," which mutates into "I saw the worst bands of my generation applied by magic marker to dry wall" later in the song.
That's hilarious. I don't think I would've been able to think of anything to say either.
