Richard Thompson's "Sweet Warrior"
Posted by Hal Bogerd at August 26, 2007 9:37 PMRichard Thompson hasn't put out a bad disc in forty years of recording. Ironically, Thomspon's remarkable consistency appears to have been a bad career move. A weak disc can actually be a career boost! The Rolling Stones, Dylan and even Ryan Adams have all have made "comebacks" with discs praised for simply being better than their recent mediocre discs.
Shamefully ignored, Richard Thompson was ranked as the 19th greatest guitarists of all time and if you look at the expert's at Rolling Stone's list and see who is ranked above him....Johnny Ramone? Kurt Cobain? I don't wanna be a pinhead no more. Nevermind.
I just picked up the disc but it is immediately obvious on first listen that Richard Thompson has penned the protest song of the year. No kids, it is not "Mr. Stupid" (although that would be a good guess). It is "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" in which RT takes on the Bush administration's misguided effort at war, or was it peace, in the Middle East from a soldier's point of view.
"Dad’s in a bad mood, Dad’s got the blues
It’s someone else’s mess that I didn’t choose
At least we’re winning on the Fox Evening News
Nobody loves me here"
Dad = Baghdad
Listen and watch and don't forget to vote!
Phil Ochs would be proud.
