Come On...........
Posted by Hal Bogerd at September 20, 2007 9:28 PM"Come On Like The Fast Lane" from The Silos may not have much twang but I always thought the alt-country tag was tenuous at best. Sure, early in their long career they covered Tom Petty's "Changed The Locks" (just kidding, I know who wrote that song) but they also covered Jonathan Richman's "I'm Straight". Buy this disc, roll down the windows, turn it up and take a drive. The blast of guitar on the opening track let's you know you bought a keeper from the Silo's trio of Walter Salas-Humara, Drew Glackin and Konrad Meissner. There isn't a throw away track with the exception of the dispensible bonus? track "kickass".
Reference point: If you like Alejandro Escovedo, you'll like this disc.
Fun fact : The obscure supergroup The Setters featured both Alejandro Escovedo and Walter Salas-Humara.
Prediction: You'll see this disc on several best of lists for 2007.
hal -- great heads up on an amazing band and yet another excellent release from salas-humara and company. I was hooked from the opening licks of "i'm over you" (of course at the time i was unaware of the Vulgar Boatmen connection) and totally sold once getting my hands on a copy of Cuba...the twang connection is tenuous on a number of occasions, but the sheer power and beauty of their body of work is a welcome addition to any lover of roots rock oriented music, and I personally find myself often lumping the Silos in with the Bottle Rockets as bands that test themselves and any constrained notions of genre --and consistently put out excellent music...and thanks for the heads up on The Setters, I'm already on the prowl!
