Hank the Hired Hand takes "A Six-Pack to Go"...
Posted by Jim Pipkin at November 7, 2007 2:27 PMHank Thompson, Waco's answer to the squeaky-clean Country of the 1950s, has passed away peacefully at home after a short battle with a very aggressive lung cancer. He was 82 years old, and he packed three or four years into every damn of of them.
Hanks's Brazos Valley Boys took Billboard's Touring Band of the Year Award FOURTEEN YEARS IN A ROW. Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.
Hank had 29 songs in the Top Ten between 1948 and 1975, not too bad for a scruffy ex-swabby whose first record was, appropriately enough, "Whoa, Sailor!" in 1946.
He last performed on Hank Thompson day, October 8th, in his hometown of Waco, Texas.
So long, Hank!
