Neko Case webcast & bonus track update

Posted by Brendan McKennedy at November 16, 2007 7:36 AM

North Carolina has finally reached the right weather for autumn listening. The sky is chilly, dark, blustery and swirled with bruise-colored leaves. And NPR delivers the soundtrack: tonight at 11PM EST, a webcast of Neko Case's concert in Los Angeles.

Also, several weeks ago I whined about Anti- Records' reissue of Fox Confessor Brings the Flood coming packaged with a "bonus" CD that offered only one new track, a demo version of the unreleased tune "Behind the House." Well, upon the release Neko did right by her fans, and offers us a free MP3 download at NekoCase.com.

(I still haven't picked up the rest of that Tom Waits set...)

the dload option is a nice touch, and I feel a bit better about loving Neko(I was hurt, i was mad, but I never stopped loving...)---but this touches on another issue that I've just stumbled across and I'd love some hickory wind input. The amazing chuck prophet (do yourselves a favor and check out his new soap and water, you will NOT be dissapointed) but he and some friends recently holed up and re-recorded Waylon's classic Dreamin My Dreams of You as a limited issue tour only release. I immediately hop on over to evangeline records to grab a copy, only to find that it is $25.50... i get the limited thing, to some degree...but this just seems like sticking it to the fans. I'm still debating the purchase, but I have to admit that I'm going to do a bit of searching for a dload before brandishing the cash...I really want to support the artist (hell, i have almost every other album and a number of compilations) but wow, things like this sure don't serve to endear the artist ...to me anyway. Am i off-base? the crazy thing is I was prepped to order several albums off the evangeline records site (they've got a great selection, just check out the excellent World Without End by Bob Frank and John Murray) but that album is 18.50...I discovered this album through a download and wanted to purchase the album, but for now I'll just troll the used bins and enjoy the dload. I guess I might open up a can of worms on the value and impact on our lives of music and the compensation to the artist, but that might be interesting ... so..thoughts?
