Happy Thanksgiving

As the regular Thursday contributor to HickoryWind.org, it is my great pleasure to wish you and yours, on behalf of all of us who write here, a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sharon and I are spending the holiday with my parents in Maine as we have done for the past several years. We have an awful lot to be thankful for: a great family; a happy, healthy daughter; and the chance to slow down a bit, away from the daily grind, to spend some time together and appreciate our many blessings.

To those of you who check in regularly, and to those of you who are new to this roots-music community, may you all have much for which you can be thankful. And for those of you who have friends and loved ones serving overseas, may they soon return home safely.

Unlike most other days, music isn’t usually a big part of Thanksgiving for me. It’s much more about family and football. But there is one song I’ve had stuck in my head for a couple weeks: Ray Davies’ “Thanksgiving Day,” from last year’s “Other People’s Lives.” Much of it is bittersweet, but there is a part that seems to sum up what Thanksgiving is about for me. So until next Thursday, I’ll leave you with it:

Now Papa looks out of the window
The sight brings a smile to his face
He sees all his children coming back home
Together on this special day

Come on over, come on over
Come on over, it’s Thanksgiving Day.
