Gene Watson - In A Perfect World - Three Stars
Posted by Larry Karnowski at November 27, 2007 9:00 AMMini-Reviews concentrate on the initial impression you get from an album -- what it sounds like, who does it remind you of, how does it make you feel?
Gene Watson - In A Perfect World - Three Stars
Gene Watson's new album, In A Perfect World, sounds like a late-70s or early-80s Pop Country album, but lest we forget, the late 70s and early 80s were the last great gasps of *good* Pop Country. That stuff still sounded right -- there were still fiddles and steel guitars and beautiful twangy harmonies. Watson summons the flavor of that era very well. I'm not a huge fan, but this definitely scratches an itch. Folks looking for grittier, more "Americana-ish" acoustic fare might enjoy the song, "I Buried Our Love," which reminds me a bit of Buddy Miller's "Does My Ring Your Finger?" For the best country song on the album, I'd stick with the first song, "Don't You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me".
Gene is worth much more than what they are giving him in accolades. If it were up to me he would be a member of the Grand Ole Opry as well as be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Gene still records country music. Most of the stuff you hear today has been bastardized and it ain't Country Music. (sorry folks but you know it's true.)
Posted by: Bill at November 27, 2007 12:48 PMI agree with Bill. Gene Watson is one of the finest, pure singers of country music still working today. His voice has that rare quality like the late, great Marty Robbins or the still impeccable sound of Ray Price. Gene's voice remains one of the best in the business and it's a true shame that most radio stations don't play his current albums. However, good news- I DID hear that very song listed by the reviewer - "I Buried Our Love" on my regular station just the other day. I guess radio likes that because it's a little bit gutsy and rawer than Gene's usual. I'm just glad Gene Watson has loaded his new CD with pedal steel and twin fiddles. It's heavenly to hear it.
Posted by: jocelyn at November 27, 2007 1:09 PMGene Watson deserves to be an honored member of the Grand Ole Opry no doubt. He also should become a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. His voice is STILL better than so many of these young so called country singers of today. In fact, their voices make me cringe. Gene's voice is still as smooth and comforting as it ever was. We are keeping it GENE WATSON COUNTRY!!!!
Posted by: Sandi at November 27, 2007 11:23 PMI have been a Gene Watson fan since 1979 and have unfortuately only seen him 4 times in concert during his tours of UK and Ireland. Gene is not and could not be a Kenny Chesney/Keith Urban they are worlds apart, their styles of entertainment off stage and on stage are different. I don't believe that Kenny/Keith and most modern day singers could command a stage for 2 hours backed by 6 musicians and sound exactly like the CD. He can sing without all the backing tracks etc, his voice is pure music and he is 100% genuine. Gene deserves to be exposed to a wider audience and his recent visits to Ireland prove that outside of America we know a truly magnificent voice when we hear it and also and entertainer. So wake up America and acknowledge Gene Watson as the best country singer there is around now and has been for the past 35 years or so.
Posted by: len moore at November 28, 2007 3:57 AMI have been a fan of real "Country" music for more years than I care to admit. I have seen real talent come and go, some real talent never makes it due to a million different circumstances.
That said, we have one of the most talented singers the country music world has ever heard, still alive, touring, making great recordings, znc remaining "true" to the country music genre. That great talent is Gene Watson, an amazing singer.
The Grand Ole Opry is totally unreasonable to not include Gene as a permanent member of the Opry, and by all rights, he should also be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
We need all the help we can get to make this happen. We need a leader, thousands will follow, if someone would just show us the way.
