Mini-Reviews concentrate on the initial impression you get from an album -- what it sounds like, who does it remind you of, how does it make you feel?

The Worthless Son-In-Laws - Sort Of Back To Having A Life - Three Stars
I'm a bit wishy-washy with the son-in-laws. They asked me to check them out at Merlefest 2007, so I wandered by the Chris Austin stage and listened to them a bit. I thought, "These guys are just a local Wilkesboro band that's been shanghaied into this huge festival. They are out of their league." I didn't stay long.

When I got this new album from them, I thought, "Well, this will be more of the same." Now I'm not so sure. I think I was unfair at Merlefest 2007. Yes, they are a local (well, near) Wilkesboro band, and yes, they were a bit out of their league, but I have to admit, they're a lot better than I gave them credit for. I think, bless their hearts, they were just scared shitless to play at Merlefest. That is something we can all understand.

So, this album is good Alt Country with a bit of Rock sound. The songwriting is solid. Songs like Linville Creek and Road to Ruleville really capture their mountain twang rock sound.

Overall, though, the production and vocals are weak. I like the direction these guys are going, though, and I'll definitely follow up with them later. I think they have a lot of raw talent, have good songs, and they're still just working out their rough edges. Don't smooth up all the edges, though, boys, keep em a little rough.

Although not for everyone, it's a decent album. Three stars. Keep your ears open for these guys in the future.

Comments

I guess I liked the disc more than Larry did.
"Linville Creek" kicks it off nicely and some of the imagery reminds me of James McMurtry. "Three cows drinking from an old bathtub" put me right on that country road. Musical reference points: Jayhawks and Lou Ford.
Bonus points for the band's name from someone who (probably) has been, is and will be at some point a worthless son-in law. I've listened to it more than several discs, by more well known artists, that I plunked down cash money for.
Nice album guys! Thanks for sending us a review copy.
