Son of Bronx in Blue
Posted by Hal Bogerd at November 27, 2007 8:25 PMI enjoyed listening to Dion's blues covers change of pace "Bronx in Blue" from 2005. I'm not enjoying his 2007 release "Son of Skip James" nearly as much. The novelty of Dion singing the blues just isn't enough to carry a second disc. There isn't anything bad here but there isn't anything you haven't heard done better by someone else, somewhere, sometime. If you're going to listen to "Hoochie Coochie Man" why not fire up Muddy's version? "Nadine"? C'mon Chuck. "My Babe", "Hoodoo Man Blues"...ah, you get the picture.
Save your money and buy some Hound Dog Taylor, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Slim, Howlin' Wolf, T-Bone Walker, Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Lazy Lester, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, B.B. King or Freddy King or Albert King or even Earl King.
Christmas shopping suggestion: If you have a friend who loves to tell you how much he loves the blues he'll probably enjoy this disc (even if he does think it is a bunch of Clapton covers).
