Joe Jackson, Ryan Adams, Wilco and me.

I had the NFL playoffs on as background noise this weekend and the thing I remember most was the music on the commericals, not the games. Joe Jackson spit out two excellent discs just after punk rock broke. It looked he'd give Elvis Costello a run at the title for "Angry Young Man" and he refused to make videos for MTV. I remember reading an interview and Joe said (I paraphrase) "Videos destroy the listener's imagination". I was impressed. I hated MTV. Unfortunately, one TV commercial has ruined my imagination regarding "One More Time" forever. Whenever I hear Joe singing "One More Time" from "Look Sharp" I'll see a floating fried vision of Taco Bell's bastardized version of Mexican food dripping yellow aerosol cheese food product......

"one more time, one more time, say you're leaving, say goodbye!"

Ryan Adams and Wilco? I'm not sure what they were selling. I heard the song but never looked at the boobtube. Imagination intact.

I think it's "love is hell" that's being used in some wireless commercial.

I'm on the fence on this one. For instance, if Tommy Womack sold a song for an advertisement and then was able to devote himself full-time to musical endeavors, it wouldn't be an issue for me.

Meanwhile, The Clash sell their version of Pressure Drop to Nissan(?) and that bothered me greatly. However, Morphine sold a song or two Nissan(?) and I was like, cool, more people will get to hear Morphine.

Joe Jackson does appear to be a hyprocrite on this one though. With Ryan Adams (as much as I like his music), this doesn't surprise me that much.

Tough one. When radio stations are becoming ever more consolidated and MTV doesn't play music anymore, how do bands get their songs out to people? How do they make money from their music?

I rather enjoy a commercial that features music from my favorite acts, as long as it isnt a "jingle" penned and performed specifically for the ad ala "Ford Truck Man" by Friggin Toby Keith. Band of Horses for Ford, Wilco for VW, Ryan Adams and Willie for GAP (a few years ago) give the otherwise boring "tivo skip worthy" commercial some artistic appeal. The Ipod ads featuring many of the top acts from the last few years have practically doubled as videos for the artist (U2, Gorillaz, etc...).
