No Depression Magazine Shutting Down?

Posted by Larry Karnowski at February 19, 2008 1:33 PM

Basically they're stopping publishing the magazines, the Internet site will continue with new content, but "it will in no way replace the print edition." They blame the move to online music downloads, downturn in music sales, and downtown in the economy in general. Here's what they had to say about it.

Wow... I must admit... I'm pretty stunned. I figured that even with the move to online media and the changes in the music industry that a niche magazine like ND would always have a home on my coffee table.

Sad news, but on the bright side at least I didn't go for the three year subscription when I renewed.

Holy mother of god! This is terrible. What a tragedy for the folks at ND, and for the rest of us.

Print ads couldn't keep the business alive anymore. Newspapers are drying up or becoming the PR wing of corporations (see: FOX), and magazines are going the same way.

Sucks big-time, but the weak buying power of the indie music listeners just can't support the old-fashioned business models.

So, the lesson here is, if they want the best Americana news and reviews, they will have to come to Hickorywind.org...
