I wish I was special ...

Posted by Stacy Chandler at June 5, 2008 1:51 AM

Because apparently Radiohead is so fucking special, but ... I don't get it. But I see this new "Best Of" album, and I wonder whether maybe it holds the key for unlocking my appreciation? Looking at the track list, do you guys think this would be a good investment for me? For my journey toward Radiohead enlightenment? Or no? Why or why not? Discuss.

If "Just" and "Paranoid Android" don't do it, I don't know what would.

You can say that again.

Larry may hang me for this, but I'll give you some advice as a VERY green (and still developing) Radiohead fan as to how I reached an appreciation for them. What I did, basically, is put my ipod on "all" for Radiohead and just let it play in the background while at work, cooking, working in the yard, etc...so basically listening to it subconsciously. After a while, I began to turn up the volume and started thinking, "hmm...this is pretty damn good." Looking at this track list, it appears that it was put together by true Radiohead fans, meaning that although it does have their "radio" hits, it also contains some of the die hard favorites as well...so it's probably a pretty good place to start. I will tell you, though, that you can buy most of their CDs for $6.99 each at yourmusic.com if you wanted to take the full plunge. Good luck!

Waylon, that is my classic recommendation for learning any new type of music. I used the same technique for picking up Jazz, Opera, and Latin music.

word...all you have to do to appreciate latin music, though, is crank it up and shake your ass...you'll be hooked, guaranteed. :)

Tequila doesn't hurt for appreciating either Radiohead or latin music.

Matter of fact, with enough tequila, you can't tell the diff.

NO. If you're gonna drop money on one disc as an intro to Radiohead I would suggest starting with "The Bends" and if you're gonna drop the cash on the double disc version buy "The Bends" and "OK Computer" If those albums don't turn you on to them I don't imagine the Best Of will.

The voice of dissent: I'm not gonna rag on The Radiohead fans but I just don't get the attraction. They're the only band I can think of that music fans feel the need to "like". Sure, I could probably learn to eat a plate of chiccaron at "Super Taqueria" while listening to The Radiohead but I'm not gonna try when I can eat the tacos while listening to Flaco Jimenez.

I'm the last person to enjoy 90s "sad white boy" music — unlike what Hal said, in my circle of friends I feel no need to "like" them (I understand what you're saying though, Hal). Anyway, Radiohead is very interesting music, and the lyrics are very interesting. I think for Radiohead, the concept of the albums is important, so I don't think a "greatest hits" is the way to go. I say buy "OK Computer" and listen to it all the way through in the dark with headphones.

Hal,
When you can't think of another band, The Onion comes to the rescue:

..and I can think of a half-dozen more in this vein. I happen to like Radiohead a lot, although I prefer OK Computer and Kid A to their more recent albums. In Rainbows is more musical than those, and I dig it.

Thanks for the Onion link Mike! Funny and on topic!
