Collectibles

Does a rare MP3 file exist? $.99 (or less) seems to be the going price for any track. I've never heard anyone say "I collect MP3 files". They accumulate and if they're lost you can just download them again. I'm sure some of the CDs I've collected may go above list price. A few rare slabs of vinyl may fetch a little bit more to some fanatic who must have a copy (for example) of Herschel Berry and the Native's regional cult favorite "New Rock and Roll". The most valuable item in my music collection? Turns out it's a book. The inscribed, autographed copy, including a self-portrait caricature, of Dave Alvin's 1995 out of print book of poetry "Any Rough Times Are Now Behind You" may be worth $200!
I can't even find a copy of Dave's 1986 collection (also out of print) "Nana, Big Joe and the Fourth of July" for sale! Imagine what that might be worth (if I wanted to sell it and I could find a buyer)!

Today's lesson: buy more poetry.

I can think of one exception that proves the rule. I'd pay well over market for mp3s of the first few Connells albums (Boylan Heights - One Simple Word), which I lost somewhere before I went all digital. They're all out of print, lost in the TVT mess. I could care beans about the physical disc, but man I miss those tunes...
