“Who is Golden Smog?”

Rhino Records release of Golden Smog’s “Stay Golden, Smog”, subtitled “The Best of Golden Smog- The Rykodisc Years” is an excellent introduction to this super group that’s not a supergroup (according to band members although fans would disagree). The rotating cast of characters has included or includes musicians from The Replacments, Jayhawks, Wilco, Soul Asylum, The Honeydogs, Son Volt, Run Westy Run and the occasional roadie. Sixteen of the eighteen tracks originally appeared on either “Down by the Old Mainstream” or “Weird Tales”. Two previously unreleased tracks, an early extended version of “Until You Came Along” and a Brian Wilson cover, “Love and Mercy”, are added for collectors. Oddly, no tracks were pulled from “On Golden Smog”, an EP of classic rock covers (reissued by Rykodisc). Bad Company's “Shooting Star”, used by Kevin Smith in “Clerks”, would have been nice addition to this excellent compilation of an underappreciated band. Most Smog fans will probably go to iTUNES and download the two bonus tracks. Fans of the above mentioned bands who aren’t familiar with Golden Smog should do themselves a favor and pick up this disc! Check out the track list below. Even if you're not a fan (yet) I'm sure you'll recognize a few names!
