Barracuda, Pink Houses, Golden Smog and Born in the USA
Posted by Hal Bogerd at September 19, 2008 10:28 PMYou know it is an election year when politicians start using rock songs in misguided attempts to connect with voters. Usually the lyrics are misinterpreted but sometimes the musician simply doesn't share the politician's beliefs. Rockin' Ronnie Raygun briefly used "Pink Houses" and "Born in the USA" until he was asked to cease and desist. I'm not a Heart fan but I have to give the Wilson sisters credit for telling McCain and Sarah "Barracuda" Palin to stop using "Barracuda" in their campaign because "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women".
I'm pretty sure "Golden Smog" won't complain if Obama uses one of the their tunes during his campaign. Here are links to three tunes a reunited Golden Smog played at a Barack Obama rally in February.
Love And Mercy (Brian Wilson cover)
These three tracks will appear on Rhino Record's "Stay Golden, Smog: The Best Of Golden Smog"
Don't forget to Vote!

So why not post them on a political blog and stick to music on this one?
Posted by: Waylon at September 22, 2008 2:31 PMThanks for reading Waylon and I respect your views as a longtime HW reader. I thought the overlap of music and politics in political campaigns merited a mention.
Posted by: Hal at September 22, 2008 5:40 PMsorry-- don't want to incite any riot police, and while i respect Waylon's 'right' to his views -- it's a blog, and the political tie-in is legit...Hal and company spend plenty of thier own time posting thier own personal musings, thoughts, desires, and excellent musical tastes and share them with others ... read into all of this -- THEIR blog and THEIR time, which they are good enough to share with all of us. If they so choose, they can post what they want, and you can choose to surf on your merry way...
Posted by: alex_supertramp at September 25, 2008 12:48 PMWell, not sure why you put 'right' in parentheses but I can expand my view a little more. Larry began this blog as a place for people to share their common love of American music, a topic that would have hopefully transcended political views. Had this been an isolated event, I would have left it alone...but I have seen several overtly political (and one-sided) posts in the past few months, and wanted to express that as a reader I don't feel it is the place for it and I don't want to see Larry's great idea hijacked by one-sided political quips that leave no room for honest dialogue in a place that they don't belong in the first place.
Posted by: Waylon at September 25, 2008 2:21 PMWaylon, I can only guess you're not a fan of Todd Snider, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin and a slew of others. On a side note I could do without any more songs, from anyone, about crystal meth.
Posted by: Hal at September 25, 2008 2:40 PMActually, musically, I like all those folks. What I'm not a fan of is anyone using their microphone to spout propaganda in an environment that doesn't allow for dialogue...including, no scratch that, ESPECIALLY from douchebags like Toby Keith. You're assuming my political views and I'm assuming yours, but ultimately I always viewed this as a great place to rise above our differences on what are petty matters in the long run, and focus on music...
Posted by: Waylon at September 25, 2008 3:02 PMWaylon, we do have some common ground. I have to admit to being annoyed at Steve Earle (for example) when I heard his anti-death penalty speech for the 8th time (and I don't even want to think about the "Just An American Boy" cd-I really hate political rants or really any rants on live discs) but then again how can you listen to Billy Bragg (I do) and not think of politics? Thanks for reading, thanks for commenting and hey, thanks for disagreeing.
