New releases: Oct. 28, 2008
Posted by Stacy Chandler at October 28, 2008 12:17 AMRyan Adams and the Cardinals -- Cardinology (Lost Highway)
I've been thinking for a while now I might revoke Ryan Adams' free pass -- the ironclad (or so I thought) commitment to buying every CD he puts out, as soon as it's released. If I listen to a few tracks and dig what I hear, then of course I'll buy it. If it's a snooze? Sorry, Ryan. I'm running out of room on my CD shelves' A's anyway. How about you? Does RA still have a free pass from you? Did he ever?
Johnny Cash -- Johnny Cash's America [CD/DVD] (Sony Legacy)
The companion to a new documentary on The Man in Black's life and times that premiered last week on the Bio channel.*
Merle Haggard -- Live from Austin, TX: 1985 (New West)
Waylon Jennings -- Live from Austin, TX (New West)
Joey + Rory -- Life of a Song (Sugar Hill)
Jesse Malin -- On Your Sleeve (One Little Indian)
Shawn Mullins -- Live at the Variety Playhouse (Vanguard)
Snow Patrol -- Hundred Million Suns (Geffen)
* Aside to Bio channel: Can we rethink that kicky little name, please? I avoided your channel like the plague for almost a year because I thought it was Bio like "biology," which, no. Didn't help that you are on my cable system right next to the Sci channel. Also no (but YES to SciFi, of course!). I liked you better as Biography, and really? It doesn't take me much longer to say the whole word. I'm willing to take the extra time and effort on the full name, just to skip all the college science lab flashbacks. Urrrg.
Listened to the Ryan Adams album last night -- free streaming on iLike. I thought it pretty much sucked. I'm going to have to pass on this one, Ryan. *sigh*
Posted by: larry at October 28, 2008 9:17 AMWow...I disagree with Larry, I heard a bootleg copy of it a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was pretty darn good. Like with his last album, I think if anyone else had put it out everyone would love it...but the bar is set high for him. Of course, I just got burned by that 1 hour show in Atlanta that I paid $60 for, so I may stick with bootlegs and live shows...anything that doesn't put another penny into his self indulgent pocket.
Posted by: Waylon at October 28, 2008 9:49 AMI've got every Ryan Adams disk released to date and the only one that gets repeated listens is The Loft Sessions. I'll give this one a pass...for now.
Posted by: Teaser at October 28, 2008 1:11 PMI feel your pain Waylon. I had the same Ryan Adams experience-a bad short show filled with idiotic stage banter. Pass.
Posted by: Hal at October 28, 2008 8:29 PMRyan will always have a special place in my music collection, no doubt, but he's far from the "always buy" list.
