Regarding Justin Townes Earle...

My far and away pick for best of 2008 is going to be the Justin Townes Earle album. Have you heard it yet? Do me a favor and just buy the track "Lone Pine Hill". If you don't dig it then I'll reinburse you the .99 :) I'm telling you, the album is 100% solid through-and-through.
Stacy recommends this album too, but to be honest, when I saw him live at the AMA Awards this past September I wasn't all that impressed. He must be a better album artist than live. With these two very strong endorsements, however, I'd better check him out!
Well, I'm with Stacy and James. Coincidentally I'm also seeing him live in ... about five hours.
Posted by: Amanda at November 24, 2008 10:59 PMAmanda, well you'll definitely have to let us know how it goes! I only saw the one live song at the AMAs, and maybe he wasn't playing his best.
Posted by: larry at November 25, 2008 8:26 AMSave me a space on the bandwagon. It's not my favorite of the year, but it's an excellent country album, and an auspicious coming-out.
Posted by: Brendan at November 25, 2008 2:03 PMWELL, that was one special gig. He was astoundingly good (solo). Got home midnight, got up for work at 4am, now gotta run on a work errand but I will write it all up tonight sometime. It was astounding. I don't know how many people were there (little back room at a pub, packed) because of the name only and didn't know his stuff but there were literally gasps and groans of pleasure from people at various points as they beheld an artist kicking off who will be one of the greats, IMHO.
It is inconceivable to me that a universe exists where Larry Karnowski does not dig Justin Townes Earle. He is made for you, man.

Posted by: Hal at November 25, 2008 6:44 PMNo argument here, Hal.
Posted by: Amanda at November 25, 2008 7:10 PMJustin Townes Earle is a freaking genius. So of course he digs Larry Karnowski. Larry is dug by geniuses all over the world.
They send him love notes in Cyrillic, promising him length, rigidity, and stamina!!
Posted by: Jim Pipkin at November 25, 2008 8:24 PMAh, y'all are making me blush! ;-)
Also, let's hear it for James, who sends me these recommendations all the time! His taste for music is only matched by his lack of posting about it. :-P
Also, album purchased and currently downloading from Amazon MP3.
Posted by: larry at November 26, 2008 9:01 AMI saw Justin Townes Earle doing a short in store performance at lunchtime todayin Melbourne Australia , and as a live artist he blew me and the rest of the audience away. Can't wait to see him again this coming Sunday.
He played songs from his forthcoming album and they sounded very tasty.
Posted by: Anne S at November 27, 2008 4:05 AMPersonally, my favorite is "Hard Living," the very first track. If you can listen to that and not dance around your living room (or bounce around in your car), you're not human, man.
Posted by: stacy at December 3, 2008 11:13 AMGoing back to his Yuma EP, there is a fantastic train song called the Ghost of Virginia.
