Black John / The Soul of John Black

Posted by Hal Bogerd at March 20, 2009 9:49 PM

John Bigham’s band “The Soul of John Black” channels the spirit of past and present blues players, blaxploitation soundtracks, jazz men, funksters, gospel and soul singers on their latest disc "Black John" on Electo Groove. The dozen tracks are a mix of soul styles and you might hear the influence or sounds of Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Otis Redding, Al Green, Johnnie Taylor, John Lee Hooker, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes, John “Blood” Ulmer, Curtis Mayfield and even some updated country blues (North Mississippi All Stars). The lyrics are suggestive (bluesy) rather than explicit (hip-ho’) consistent with the classic sound of “The Soul of John Black”. The songs range from guitar funk to bluesy soul ballads and the wide variety gives the disc the feel of an updated multi-artist soul revue. When the disc ends with the beautiful acoustic guitar ballad “Thinking About You” it is easy to imagine Mr. Bigham saying goodnight and thanking you for tuning in and listening to “The Soul Of John Black”.

Recommended tracks: “Black John” and “Thinking About You” are the first and last tracks on the disc and they give an idea of the breadth of John’s talent and styles. Stop by http://www.myspace.com/thesoulofjohnblack and have a listen.

"The Soul of John Black" is on tour and they may be playing at a Blues Festival near you!
