Podcast: Scott Miller's "Let You Down"
Posted by Larry Karnowski at April 12, 2009 12:30 PMScott Miller is pissed off. He's pissed off at the government, the economy, and just the general sad state of things. Although his new album For Crying Out Loud, coming out Tuesday, starts on an angry note with the title track, it grows lighter and tenderer and ends with the happier, softer side of Scott.
Several stand-out songs include the podcast-featured song, "Let You Down," an acoustic Piedmont Blues-tinged stomper with a driving Bluegrass rhythm. (I want my now-defunct band to cover this one, once we get back together! "I'm Right Here, My Love" is a soothing duet with Patty Griffin. "Wildcat Whistle" will please fans of his historical-bent songs like "Red Ball Express." This song finds us looking out from the eyes of an old-school, exploited coal miner in the western Virginian mountains.
Finally, "Feel So Fair to Midland" is a new direction for Miller -- a totally instrumental tune. It's ebb and flow between V-Roy-esque electric guitars and into more Appalachian-sounding acoustic guitars seems to echo the internal struggle of his two inner halves: garage rocker and mountain folklorist. God bless Scott Miller!
