REK / Wait Wait...
Posted by Adam McClellan at May 31, 2009 8:17 PMI'm laying bare my demographic markers for all to see here, but in case you missed it...Robert Earl Keen's appearance on NPR's "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me" is excellent stuff.
I heard it -- uh, y'know, at a friend's house. Yeah. It was awesome. I hadn't heard of the "Rolling Stone" description of Robert Earl Keen as "the Grateful Dead for frat boys," but yeah, that pretty much nails the type of crowd you see at his shows. (His music, of course, is much more nuanced -- in places -- than that.)
I was a little sad that all the talk of REK's college days didn't contain a mention that his roommate was my secret husband Lyle Lovett, but that's cool. I guess.
Posted by: stacy at June 1, 2009 1:04 PMI had no idea about the Keen-Lovett factoid -- happen to know whether that was blind luck or self-selection?
Posted by: Adam at June 1, 2009 7:18 PMAdam, Check out "The Front Porch Song" (Lovett/Keen) on Robert's early album titled oddly enough "The Live Album". There's no telling what those two might have accomplished if Yoko, I mean Stacy, hadn't stepped in.
Posted by: Hal at June 2, 2009 7:59 AMYou know, I don't know how they came to be roommates -- that's a great question!
"This Old Porch" on Lyle's debut album is the same song that Hal mentions, essentially. It's interesting to see how each changed lyrics here and there, how they perform it, etc. And it's a blast to envision all the trouble those two probably got into as roommates!
