Commander Cody’s 2009 Comeback

Posted by Hal Bogerd at June 4, 2009 10:28 PM

Twenty years after his last studio recording, and over forty years since first forming “His Lost Planet Airmen”, Commander Cody is back at full strength with “Dopers, Drunks and Everyday Losers” (Blind Pig). If you’re tired of the almost obligatory Americana crystal meth references, Commander Cody is rocking and rolling to a different drug and a different time on “Roll Your Own” and “Stems and Seeds”. “Wine Do Your Stuff” and “Last Call For Alcohol” keep the party mood alive and a truckin’ tune, “Semi-Truck”, and a cover of Hiatt's "Tennesse Plates" are thrown in for good measure. The disc closes with the Commander covering Hoyt Axton’s mellow pre-Nancy Reagan anti-drug “No No Song” (Ringo recorded it, he did not write it). George Frayne aka Commander Cody pounds the piano and handles most of the lead vocals on “Dopers, Drunks and Everyday Losers” and it sounds like he’s finally found a replacement for “His Lost Planet Airmen” with Steve Barbuto (drums), Mark Emerick (guitar), Randy Bramwell (bass), Chris “Tiny” Olsen (pedal steel) and Professor Louie (organ and accordion). If there was an Americana “Comeback Of The Year” award, Commander Cody would win hands down. Recommended.
