Six degrees of Bill German
Posted by Hal Bogerd at July 13, 2009 11:22 AMMy friend John Howie, formerly of Two Dollar Pistols, is currently recording tracks with his new band John Howie Jr. and The Rosewood Bluff with Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids who played guitar with Dexter Romweber on the Dex Romweber Duo's "Ruins of Berlin " who recently released "The Wind Did Move", a 7" vinyl 45 rpm, played on and produced by Jack White of the White Stripes who played with Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones on "Shine a Light" who befriended Bill German founder of the Stones only newsletter "Beggars Banquet".
Bill has written a fascinating book, "Under Their Thumb" subtitled "how a nice boy from Brookln got mixed up with the Rolling Stones and lived to tell about it", about his fanzine and how it eventually led him to become more than just a fan but also a friend to Keith and Ron. Sixteen year old Bill's obsession with the Rolling Stones inspired him to start Beggars Banquet . Pre-internet and blogs, Bill wrote, handstamped and mailed his mimeographed newsletter to other Stones fanatics from 1978 until 1996. "Under Their Thumb", a unique insider's view to the Rolling Stones, touring and the rock and roll lifestyle, is recommended reading for every Stones fanatic or even the more casual Stones fan.
