Amy Speace and the Tearjerks / The Killer In Me
Posted by Hal Bogerd at July 27, 2009 11:05 PMWith "The Killer in Me" on Wildflower Records, Amy Speace has recorded her electric Americana version of Richard Thompson’s “Shoot Out The Lights”. The twelve personal tracks rock, roll and wail as Amy exorcises a lover and demons in public for all to see and hear. The title track, “The Killer in Me”, is a dark introspective examination of the failed relationship but Amy lets the ex know in no uncertain terms what she wants when she boasts “Someone better’s gonna scratch this itch” on the optimistic radio-friendly track “Better”. Recorded in only seven days, “The Killer In Me” is proof that a huge budget and months of studio time aren’t required to produce remarkable music.
Bonus track: “The Weight of the World” may be the best post-Bush anti-war song that's been written. In the grand folk tradition, armed with just her guitar, Amy tells the story of a young girl watching an older brother sent off to war “dodging bullets when he wasn’t dodging bombs”. There’s no happy ending and no matter whom you voted for you’ll probably fight back a tear as the song ends. Watch the video for "Weight of the World" here.
Copies of "The Killer in Me" are available at Amy's online store. Pick up a copy and listen for rock legend Ian Hunter's backing vocals on "The Killer In Me" and "I Met My Love".
