Freedy Johnston / Rain On The City

Johnston's "My Favorite Waste Of Time" (2008), included covers of "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" by Marshall Crenshaw ,"I Want You Bad" by NRBQ and "I've Been Waiting" by Matthew Sweet. On 2010's "Rain On The City" Freedy sings his songs which not surprisingly, given his taste in covers, are a hook-filled batch of mostly mellow power pop. Like Nick Lowe's recent work, Freedy's exploring and expanding into jazz ("The Kind Of Love We're In") and country ("It's Gonna Come Back To You") while remaining true to his power pop rock roots. This is "Adult Pop for Now People" (.....do I need to explain the reference to Nick Lowe's classic "Pure Pop For Now People").

You can listen to several tracks including the standout track "Don't Fall In Love With A Lonely Girl" here.

For fans of Matthew Sweet, Nick Lowe, Tommy Keene and Jonathan Rundman.

HIghly Recommended.
