Recovered cover
Posted by Hal Bogerd at January 19, 2010 6:38 PMWhile compiling my favorites of 2009 list I noticed a single track from Buffalo Springfield's boxset was in my most played list in iTUNES. How did "Out of My Mind", a relatively obscure track from 1966, make it into my heavy rotation?
I caught Matthew Barber's solo set at "The Mill" in Carrboro, NC last spring. He played most of "Ghost Notes" (one of my favorite discs of 2009), a few older tracks of his I wasn't familiar and an unexpected cover of "Out Of My Mind". I went home and dug out my copy and rediscovered the song thanks to Matthew's cover!
I recently asked Matthew what other songs he's covered:
"As for covers, there have been many over the years. Some of my favourites include Don't Do It (The Band/Otis Redding), Won't Back Down (Petty), Bird On A Wire (Leonard Cohen), Wicked Game (Chris Isaak)."
Barber update: Matt has a new album coming out Feb.23rd. Rumor has it if you lliked "Ghost Notes" you'll dig "True Believer". You can preorder it here.
Other memorable covers I've heard in the past few years:
Two Dollar Pistols / "September Gurls"
Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple / "I Am The Cosmos"
Feel free to post any memorable covers (Big Star related or not) you've heard.
The Gourds' 'September Gurls' and 'Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard' (Prine) come to mind.
